The short answer

Both Nissans we calibrate are naturally aspirated petrol Patrols. That is the most useful thing to know before you pay anyone, because it puts both of them in the 5 to 12 percent band rather than the 15 to 30 percent a turbocharged engine returns.

What the Nissan platforms share

Software cannot add air an engine never breathed. On the 5.6 litre VK56VD, a realistic gain from a file is 40 to 48 hp, and the 4.8 litre TB48DE follows the same pattern at a slightly lower figure. Those are estimates rather than dyno readings, taken off a Dragy Pro and the ECU log instead. Both are worked on the same Alientech tooling, and on both of them the largest single change a customer feels is throttle and gearbox strategy rather than peak output. If you want a percentage starting with a 2 on a Patrol, the route is forced induction and hardware, not a file.

What goes wrong with a Nissan here

These are the complaints that bring a car in, across both platforms.

Ignition timing pulled hard once the ECU sees 45°C intake air, which is most of the year here.
The Y62 shuffling between third and fourth on the highway. That is gearbox strategy, not a shortage of power.
Fan logic that lets the Super Safari run hot in stationary traffic.
Throttle pedal delay written into the factory map on both platforms.

What differs between the Nissan models

Engine code first. A facelift or a market variant can change the maps completely, so the year on the door matters as much as the badge.

400 hp and 560 Nm from the direct-injection VK56VD with VVEL, which acts as a continuously variable throttle. Tuning it means the VVEL lift and event tables, not a global ignition adder. Figures apply from 2014; the earlier car is a 317 hp VK56DE and is quoted separately.

280 hp and 451 Nm from the TB48DE, available manual or automatic, and it is the platform people actually turbocharge. We wire in and calibrate MoTeC M130 and Haltech Elite 2500 standalone units on it, including anti-lag and boost-by-gear.

Which Patrol is the better tuning platform?

The Super Safari, if the plan involves boost. The TB48DE takes a standalone ECU and a turbo, and that is where the large numbers live. The Y62 is the better road car and the tighter tuning platform, because direct injection and VVEL leave a file very little room on atmospheric air.

Does the same file work on both Patrols?

No. The Nissan Patrol Y62 runs the 5.6 litre VK56VD with VVEL, which acts as a continuously variable throttle, so tuning it means the VVEL lift and event tables. The Super Safari runs the 4.8 litre TB48DE. Different engines, different injection systems, different gearboxes, and no shared Patrol file exists.

What about the Y61 with the TB48?

Same engine, same calibration, so we quote a Y61 as a Nissan Patrol Super Safari. The 4.8 litre TB48DE ran from 2000 to 2024 across those bodies, and the file follows the engine code rather than the badge on the tailgate. It is also the Patrol people actually turbocharge, and we calibrate MoTeC and Haltech standalones on it.
