Does a windscreen replacement need ADAS calibration?
Yes, on almost anything built since about 2018 that has lane keeping, adaptive cruise or automatic emergency braking.
The forward camera is not mounted to the roof or the mirror stalk. It clips into a bracket bonded to the inside of the windscreen. Take the glass out and the camera comes out with it. Put new glass in and the camera goes back onto a different bracket, on different glass, at an angle that is close to the old one and not the same as it.
Close is the problem. The camera is judging distance and closing speed at a hundred metres or more. A fraction of a degree of error at the lens is metres of error at the far end of what it is watching.
Recalibration is what corrects that. It is a separate job from fitting the glass, it needs the manufacturer's own diagnostic software, and most glass fitters in the UAE do not have that software. Some tell you. Some do not, because you did not ask and the car drives away with no warning light.
Which cars in the UAE have a camera on the windscreen?
More than owners expect, and the list is not limited to European luxury cars.
- Toyota Land Cruiser 300, Prado and Hilux with Toyota Safety Sense, and the Lexus LX and RX alongside them
- Nissan Patrol Y62 with ProPILOT, and the Infiniti equivalents
- Mercedes-Benz across the range, G-Class, GLE, S-Class, where the wording on the cluster is Active Distance Assist
- BMW G-series, so X5, X7, 5 Series, 7 Series
- Land Rover Range Rover and Range Rover Sport
- Ford F-150 and Raptor with Co-Pilot360
- Honda Accord and CR-V with Honda Sensing
- Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q range
Radar is a second question. Plenty of these cars carry a radar behind the grille or the badge as well as the camera on the screen, and the two have to agree with each other about where the road is. Bumper work moves the radar the same way glass work moves the camera.
The practical test is not the badge, it is the VIN. Two Land Cruiser 300s on the same street can have different sensor packages.
What actually goes wrong if nobody recalibrates it?
The systems keep working. That is the dangerous part.
Nothing switches itself off, because nothing is broken. The camera powers up, talks on the network and sends a picture. It is simply aiming a little high, or a little low, or a degree off centre, and every judgement it makes inherits that error.
What that looks like from the driver's seat:
- Lane keeping steers towards a line that is not where it thinks it is, so the car sits off centre or tugs at the wheel for no reason.
- Automatic emergency braking works from a wrong estimate of distance and closing speed. Aim high and it sees less road in front of the bumper, so it decides late. Aim low and it reads shadows, expansion joints and heat shimmer off the tarmac as objects, so it decides early. Both have consequences at 120 km/h.
- Adaptive cruise holds the wrong gap, or keeps dropping out and handing the car back to you.
- Traffic sign recognition reads the wrong sign, which is the harmless version and often the first clue anything is wrong.
None of that necessarily sets a fault code. The module is doing exactly what it was told to do with the angles it currently holds.
Static or dynamic calibration: which one does my car need?
It depends on the manufacturer, and a good number of cars need both.
Static calibration is done stationary. Printed targets go on stands in front of the car at distances and heights the manufacturer specifies to the millimetre. The floor has to be level, the vehicle has to be level, tyre pressures set, fuel load accounted for, nothing in the boot, lighting even, and no reflective clutter behind the target for the camera to find instead. Then the software runs the routine and writes the angles.
Dynamic calibration is a road drive. The software holds the car in a learning routine while you drive at a specified speed, often somewhere in the 60 to 80 km/h band, on a road with clear lane markings, for a set duration or distance.
Dynamic is the one that fails here. The routine wants continuous painted lines, a steady speed and workable light, and a UAE afternoon can take away all three: faded markings on an older stretch, stop-start traffic that drops you out of the speed window, blowing sand, and a low sun straight into the glass. A calibration drive that aborts three times is not a shop being slow. It is a shop refusing to sign off a routine that did not complete.
Static work has to happen at a workshop, because a villa driveway is not a level floor with controlled light. Software-only work we can bring to the car. This is not that.
Which diagnostic software actually performs an ADAS calibration?
The manufacturer's own. This is where a generic tool stops being useful, and it is worth naming what belongs to what:
- Mercedes-Benz: Xentry, over a C4 or C5 multiplexer, with Vediamo for parameter work Xentry will not expose
- BMW: ISTA+ for the calibration routines, E-Sys for coding
- Volkswagen and Audi: ODIS
- Jaguar Land Rover: SDD on the older cars, Pathfinder on current ones
- Ford: IDS on the older vehicles, FDRS on current
- Toyota and Lexus: Techstream
- Honda: HDS
- Nissan and Infiniti: Consult III
All of those are licensed and in daily use here, which is why we can tell you before you book which routine your car wants and whether it needs the drive as well as the targets.
A generic OBD-II reader cannot do this and it is not a matter of the reader being cheap. The OBD-II standard obliges a vehicle to expose emissions-related powertrain data through that port and nothing else. A camera calibration is not a code and not a live value. It is a guided routine that writes new mounting angles into a driver assistance module and then verifies them, and it exists only inside the software the manufacturer wrote.
The same gap explains why a scan at a general workshop can come back clean on a car that plainly has a problem. It read the tenth of the vehicle the standard made visible.
What else moves the camera besides new glass?
Ride height and geometry, mostly. The camera is aimed at the road, so anything that changes how the car sits relative to the road changes the aim.
- Suspension work, new springs, a lift kit, air suspension recalibrated or replaced
- A different tyre size or profile, which moves the whole body up or down
- A four wheel alignment that corrects rear thrust angle, because the camera was aimed at the old one
- Accident repair anywhere near the screen, the front panel or the subframe
- Armouring. A ballistic conversion adds around a tonne and changes ride height, sensor angles and often the glass itself, which is why armoured vehicle work includes ADAS recalibration as standard rather than as an extra
- Any job where the camera was unclipped, including headlining and interior mirror work
Why "no warning light" does not mean it was done
A misaimed camera is a healthy camera. It has power, it has a network connection, it is producing an image. There is nothing for it to report, so it reports nothing.
The only reliable way to know is to ask the module directly what mounting angles it currently holds and when it last completed a calibration, and that question can only be asked in the manufacturer's software. A full fault scan will not surface it on its own either, because it is not a fault.
If your screen was replaced in the last year and nobody mentioned calibration, assume it was not done.
What to ask before the glass goes in
You can ask all of these on the phone.
- Does my car have a forward camera on the windscreen? Ask them to answer from the VIN, not from the model name.
- Who is doing the calibration, and in which software? You want the name of the manufacturer's system back.
- Static, dynamic, or both, and where does the dynamic drive happen?
- Will I get the report out of the tool afterwards?
- Is the replacement glass correct in the camera area? The bracket position, the wedge angle in the interlayer and the clear window through the black frit all have to match, and an aftermarket screen that is fine everywhere else can be wrong there.
If the answer to question two is a brand of handheld scanner, the calibration is not being done. It is being skipped and hoped over.
